From October 2022 to September 2023, twenty outstanding women in executive-level leadership positions in African conservation will come together for a year of virtual and in-person sessions to transform their own and each other’s leadership for the benefit of people, wildlife, and ecosystems across the continent and around the world.

About the Award

In 2017, Women for the Environment Africa (WE Africa) was born through the determination of a small, dedicated group of women conservationists frustrated with the current model of conservation leadership. They shared a conviction that a different style of leadership with more diverse and inclusive teams  and more collaboration and less competition would result in more conservation innovation and impact. This desire to “do conservation differently” led to the realization that we needed to both build a community of women conservation leaders in Africa to increase our resilience, and establish a transformational leadership course to increase our numbers at the decision-making tables.

The W.E Africa year long transformative leadership journey is for women who meet the following criteria:

• African nationals, current citizens of a country in Africa, or those who have had permanent residency in Africa for a minimum of 15 years
• A minimum of 15 years of experience working in the environmental space in government, NGO, or private sector in Africa, including at least 5 years serving in a senior leadership role*
• A commitment to investing in your personal growth and participation for the full 12-month program
• A record of mentorship and desire to support future environmental leaders
• Access to reliable internet
• Able to speak and understand English conversationally
• A commitment to: 1) contribute USD $500 toward the cost of the course to secure your place; and 2) cover your travel costs to two in-person retreats for an estimated $1,500. Together, your contribution represents approximately 15% of the course value.**

**A limited number of scholarships are available to help offset costs for selected applicants.

About the Award

The African Investigative Journalism Conference (#AIJC22) is the premier annual gathering of African investigative journalists – a three-day international conference for and about investigative journalism. It involves skills training, networking, promoting, collaboration and in-depth accounts of major investigative stories. It is hosted by the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

The African Investigative Journalism Conference (AIJC) offers a limited number of fellowships for participation in this three-day celebration of the continent’s investigative reporting. This year the conference will return to a face-to-face event in Johannesburg, Oct 31 – Nov 2 and will offer inspiring talks, engagement, networking and cutting-edge training in a range of skills.

About the Award: The award is open to all full time students of any age including recently (within the last year) graduated students and BA, MA and MFA students. It is also open to photographers (not attending a course) who are 24 years old or younger.

Ian Parry was a photojournalist who died while on assignment for The Sunday Times during the Romanian revolution in 1989. He was just 24 years of age. Aidan Sullivan, then picture editor, and Ian’s friends and family created the Ian Parry Scholarship in order to build something positive from such a tragic death. Each year we hold an international photographic competition for young photographers who are either attending a full-time photographic course or are under 24.

The Ian Parry Scholarship is divided into two categories: The Tom Stoddart Award for Excellence and The Canon Award for Potential.

The entry criteria for both are the same and the judges will make their decisions based on the individual merits of the entries. Entrants must submit a portfolio and a clear proposal of a project they would undertake if they won the scholarship.

About the Award: International Student Cultural Scholarship (ISCS) is open to all new and returning F-1 and J-1 international students. The International Student Cultural Scholarship is awarded automatically to the new students during their first semester at UHV. If students wish to receive the scholarship beyond the first semester, students must maintain the International Student Cultural Scholarship (ISCS) requirements listed below. The scholarship covers $3000 per year ($1500 per semester, fall and spring semester).
