The French Institutes for Advanced Study (FIAS) Fellowship Programme invites applications for the 2026–2027 academic year. Coimbra Group Universities have been providing, since 2008, young researchers from universities in Sub-Saharan Africa with the opportunity to spend a short period (generally 1 to 3 months) at a Coimbra Group University to carry out part of their research there.

Eligibility criteria and list of participating universities

Universities of the Coimbra Group offer short-term visits (generally 1 to a maximum 3 months) to young African researchers from higher education institutions from Sub-Saharan Africa. The main aim of this scholarship program is to enable scholars to undertake research in which they are engaged in their home institution and to help them establish academic and research contacts in Europe.

The scholarships are financially supported by the Coimbra Group member universities participating in this program, while the Coimbra Group Office is in charge of the administrative management of the
applications.

The International Fellowships programme provides support for outstanding early career researchers to make a first step towards developing an independent research career through gaining experience across international borders. Each award is expected to involve a specific and protected research focus with the award holder undertaking high quality, original research.

This scheme is jointly run by the British Academy and the Royal Society.

Aims

The overarching aim of the International Fellowships program is to attract and retain emerging talent in the UK and build a globally connected, mobile research and innovation workforce. The objectives are to:

• Attract talented International early career researchers to establish and conduct their research in the UK;
• Support early career researchers to pursue high-quality and innovative lines of research;
• Provide opportunities to acquire and transfer new skills and knowledge through training and career development;
• Foster long-term relationships through networking opportunities and the International Fellowships alumni program.

The British Academy International Fellowships Program 2025 Eligibility Requirements

The applicant must:

• Have a PhD, or applicants in the final stages of their PhD will be accepted provided that the PhD will be completed (including viva) before the start date of the Fellowship. Confirmation of the award of the PhD will be required before any Fellowship award is confirmed.
• Applicants should have no more than seven years of active full time postdoctoral experience at the time of application (discounting career breaks, but including teaching experience and/or time spent in industry).
• Be working outside the UK.
• Not hold UK citizenship.
• Be competent in oral and written English.
• Have a clearly defined and mutually beneficial research proposal agreed with a UK host researcher.

Duration and Value of Award

The International Fellowships offer support for two years and the award is offered at 80% FEC. Applicants may apply for research expenses of up to £12,000 and relocation costs of up to £8,000. Applicants will need to justify the level of research expenses and relocation costs requested in their application.

Applicants may also be eligible to receive follow-up Alumni funding following the tenure of their Fellowship to support networking activities with UK-based or international researchers.

Title: ETH4D Doctoral Mentorship Program 2025/2026 | Fully Funded

Application deadline: 30 March 2025

1. Goals of the ETH4D Doctoral Mentorship Programme

The mentorship entails remote support of doctoral students in low- and lower-middle-income countries as well as a research stay of 1-3 months at ETH Zurich (see point 3). The goals of the program are:

• to strengthen collaborations between ETH groups and universities or research institutes in low- and lower-middle-income countries

• to support doctoral candidates at universities in low- and lower-middle-income countries with mentorship and technical knowhow and at the same time to provide research groups at ETH with additional perspectives and insight

• to expand the academic network of doctoral candidates to become successful researchers and leaders inside and outside of academia.

2. Eligibility for the ETH4D Doctoral Mentorship Programme

Eligible are doctoral candidates registered at a university or research institute in any country listed in the DAC list of the OECD1 except from upper-middle-income countries.

Activities and Deliverables

The mentorship is a one-year appointment and comprises the following components:

•  Mentorship from one ETH professor, senior scientist, or postdoc over one year of the mentee’s doctoral studies. For this, monthly meetings need to be held. We suggest clearly defining the goals of the project, e.g., a presentation at a conference, or a joint publication. ETH mentors are free to serve on the doctoral committee of the ETH4D mentee, but this is not a requirement.
• The applicant must be an ETH professor, regardless of the position of the mentor.
• Research stay at the mentor’s research group (ETH Zurich, Switzerland) for 1-3 months during the mentorship period.
• The mentee can attend an academic conference and/or receive research material for up to 6 CHF.

Finances and Budget

The grant covers expenses up to a maximum of 15’000 CHF and includes the following:

• Economy roundtrip ticket (max. 2 kCHF) to and from Switzerland for the research stay
• Visa fees
• Travel allowance to attend an academic conference and research material (e.g., lab equipment) (max 6 CHF).
• Fees for health insurance
• Local Transport ticket
• Accommodation
• Living allowance for the duration of the research stay at ETH Zurich to cover food and other personal costs (paid in cash by the professorship): 850 CHF per month

Title: United Nations University 2025 JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme for Young Scholars and Policymakers

UNU offers Postdoctoral Fellowships to provide young scholars and policymakers, especially from the developing world, with a multidisciplinary context within which to pursue advanced research and training that are of professional interest to the successful applicant and direct relevance to the research agenda of their selected thematic program. Since the start of the Fellowship Programme at UNU-IAS in 1996, more than 250 young researchers – 70% of whom are from the developing world – have benefited from collaboration with UNU and Japanese scholars.

Jointly organized by the UNU and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), the JSPS–UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme is designed to provide promising, highly qualified young researchers with the opportunity to conduct advanced research in sustainability under host researchers at domestic universities and research institutions across Japan in cooperation with UNU-IAS.

This fellowship is aimed at candidates who have completed their doctorates in the past six years (with the period of maternity/paternity leave subtracted) and have professional and/or research experience. UNU-IAS Tokyo acts as the nominating authority for the JSPS–UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme. Nominated fellows will be considered members of their host institutions and are required to carry out their research under the supervision of their host researcher. Fellows can conduct research at UNU-IAS if mutually agreed upon by the host university.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree at the time of application (received on or after 2 April 2019 with the period of maternity/paternity leave subtracted, counting 4 weeks as a month) or be scheduled to receive a doctoral diploma by the end of July 2025 after passing the dissertation defense. Applicants must be citizens of countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan.

Japanese nationals (including dual citizenship holders) and permanent residents of Japan are not eligible to apply. Those who have previously been awarded a Standard or Pathway Fellowship under the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Research in Japan are also not eligible.

Terms of the Award

• Airfare: a round-trip air ticket (based on JSPS regulations)
• Maintenance allowance: JPY 362,000 per month
• Miscellaneous: a settling-in allowance of JPY 200,000 and overseas travel insurance

The award amounts are subject to change by JSPS.

Note: If a fellow is already living in Japan or obtains resident status before the fellowship is scheduled to begin, the air ticket to Japan and settling-in allowance will not be provided.

A research grant (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research) is available to cover cooperative research-related expenses. Application for these grants is made by the host researcher through the host institution.

Duration of the Fellowship

Fellowships are awarded for 24 months in full-month units starting from the date of initiation. Fellows must start their fellowship in Japan by 30 November 2025 and reside in Japan continuously throughout the fellowship.

UNU will contact successful candidates by April 2025 and the candidates will then submit an official application to JSPS through UNU-IAS. It might take up to three months for JSPS to process its award decisions after receiving the applications
