Help get better trained personnel to the front line faster
Project Selborne is a Transformational Training programme with a strategic goal of modernising Royal Navy training to deliver “better trained sailors to the front line faster”.
You will be responsible for supporting and the future development of the Schedule Optimisation Engine (SOE), data engineering and analytics across operational data and other data sources to provide the ability to create predictive training models and business cases based on what could happen across several business scenarios and opportunities.
The SOE is a tool that will optimise the schedule of training for the whole of the Royal Navy.
You will work closely with and support the Head of Insight, Royal Navy Training Management Group (TMG), the Data Manager and the Insight Manager in respect to understanding business needs, data structures and relationships which enables training delivery to be data led with enhanced outcomes.
This is a home based role with requirement to attend meetings at HMS Collingwood when required.

Job Tittle: Developer/Data Scientist
What you’ll be doing:
- Working within the Insight as a Service (IaaS) team which includes the ongoing support of the future Schedule Optimisation Engine.
- Utilising, managing, and supporting the IaaS analytics tooling and supporting data platforms
- Understanding the Selborne business, its strategic goals, committed outcomes and commercial implications to support Insight projects and business cases
- Participating in relevant change and growth opportunities providing strong insight, analytics and data expertise and knowledge including operational, business outcomes, commercial, financial, solution and delivery options
- Identifying new opportunities and challenges for the use of data and analytics including collaboration with other business areas to identify ways to incorporate data and analytics into existing processes or offerings
- Providing support in the development of client-specific data science and MI solutions
What we’re looking for:
- Good understanding of data engineering and data platforms including but not limited to Oracle APEX, JAVA, CPLEX Data Architecture and Palantir Foundry
- Software design experience (UX/UI)
- To be able to work with a wide of variety of data sources (MS, XML, APIs)
- To be able to manage and deliver triage tickets, routine maintenance and defect fixes whilst further developing the SOE solution post launch
- Excellent stakeholder management experience
- Experience with data science, data engineering, data management, and visualisation tools
- Experience within the Defence Sector and Royal Navy would be beneficial
- Must be able to obtain UK SC clearance
About Project Selborne:
Project Selborne is a wide scale, 12 year transformation of Royal Navy Training. The contract worth GBP 1 billion was awarded in December 2020 to a consortium led by Capita to deliver and modernise training for the RN. The consortia of partners known as Team Fisher includes Raytheon UK, Elbit Systems UK, Fujitsu and University of Lincoln together with 14 other UK-based suppliers.
