emPawa Africa is a music label services platform that partners with independent African artists and labels in creating, promoting and funding their art to the world whilst maintaining their economic and creative freedom.

Finance is one of the company’s most critical departments, and is a service that artists value the most after distribution. We are looking for a forward-thinking professional with an analytical and insightful experience to support the current needs of this department.

We are now in search of an ambitious and motivated Finance Lead with industry experience to join emPawa Africa.

You will be responsible for the financial management of the emPawa Africa business. Activities include royalty accounting, budgeting, planning, forecasting, reporting, and analysing spend as well as managing the accounting and reporting to our key artists. In addition to these you will build systems to ensure compliance and accuracy as we expand into new lines of business.

The ideal candidate should have the right combination of entrepreneurial hustle, experience working with music royalties and a passion for making things run smoothly.

Duties to include but not limited to

  • Manage the emPawa Africa Finance team
  • Oversee emPawa Africa’’s monthly royalty accounting to artists and DJ’s on the same day each month;
  • Take ownership of ongoing budgeting, management accounts, forecasting & tracking
  • Help design systems to streamline accounting for various music revenue streams
  • Build finance workflows, processes and systems to manage new lines of business & services
  • Strategise with the wider team to build the best platform for Artists
  • Ensure that artist royalty statements are issued in a timely manner.
  • Create and maintain royalty accounts information for royalty recipients in our artist royalty system, including by updating the recipient’s contact information and tax identification numbers as needed;
  • Record all transactions in Xero as they happen and keep track of all expenses by jurisdiction, artist, project or as may be required
  • Ensure timely payments of all operating invoices;
  • Provide timely and accurate confirmation of payments to booking coordinators between (24hrs – 48hrs)
  • Process and ensure timely payments of royalties on the same day of each month;
  • Provides up to date, reliable, financial information to stakeholders through the management of accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll and pensions.
  • Develop and maintain internal control systems to safeguard financial assets of the Company.
  • Oversee all purchasing and payroll activity for staff and participants;
  • Maintains all banking & accounting relationships.
  • Develop the annual budget for the business
  • Provide monthly management accounts and yearly audited accounts
  • Provide quarterly updates to investors and shareholders on business performance
  • Model transactions and scenarios to evaluate capital deployment opportunities
  • Reconcile Bank Statements on a weekly basis and review royalty payments as needed.
  • Process and review semi annual, quarterly and monthly artist royalty statements to ensure the accuracy of both the royalty rates applied and the underlying earnings on which royalties are being paid;
  • Perform any other duties and tasks related to the Department’s role and responsibilities that might be assigned from time to time.

The ideal candidate will have / be

Bachelor’s Degree and at least 5 years of experience in an analytical role in accounting, finance, business management or auditing.

  • Experience of working in the creative industries, ideally with music royalties and/or experience with management accounting, Fintech or Financial services
  • Self-starter who takes initiative and can work without continuous instruction. Takes ownership for the role and its output
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work with diverse and global teams
  • Strong analytical skills with exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is key as output from the team will be used to make strategic business decisions
  • Excellent systems skills including strong knowledge of core accounting systems, Excel and Keynote.
  • Ability to prioritise workload, manage a team and respond quickly to urgent requests for information. High standard of planning and organising skills
  • Experience with analyzing and reporting data in order to identify issues, trends, or exceptions to drive improvement of results and find solutions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Xero and G Suite applications.
  • Passionate about music from the African continent.
  • Comfortable in a fast-moving, constantly evolving environment and you have the maturity to bring stability to challenging situations.
  • The ability to work under pressure and time constraints.
