We’re Craft Gin Club – a Sunday Times Fast Track 100 UK startup and the world’s biggest gin subscription service.Ever since our founders pitched successfully on Dragons’ Den, we’ve been hard at work, scouting the country – and the globe! – to find the world’s finest small-batch gins. Every month, we send our members a surprise box packed with craft gins, mixers, foodie treats and a copy of GINNED!, our glossy club magazine.Delivered directly to the homes of many tens of thousands of gin lovers on a monthly basis, our magazine plays a fundamental role in our members’ experience, building context and coherence around the contents of our Gin of the Month boxes, telling the stories behind our hand-selected spirits, helping our readers discover new cocktail and food recipes, and more.As a business, we are now also expanding our horizons beyond just gin, with our first rum box launching recently and other spirits on the horizon. With this comes an exciting opportunity to expand the scope of our print publishing output, developing our content to embrace this new product offering.The RoleWe’re looking for an experienced Managing Editor who is full of ideas to help us steer our flagship printed magazine into this next phase.We’re looking for someone with bags of experience within magazine print publishing and a strong track record of managing teams in the production of accessible, entertaining and educational lifestyle content, preferably in the food and drink space.You will be a gifted creative writer and editor who is also commercially savvy, adept at delivering original editorial features alongside engaging sponsored content that will thrill our clients and fascinate our readers.Reporting directly to our Chief Brand & Community Officer, you will own our magazine content strategy, overseeing all aspects of commissioning, editing and producing of our monthly Ginned! Magazine. You will also be excited by the opportunity to continue getting stuck into writing features yourself.You will line-manage our Junior writer and a freelance sub-editor, while also overseeing the work of our in-house design team and submissions from members of the wider content team. The role will also require close collaboration with our in-house design, commercial eCommerce and growth teams.As well as a CV, we would love to see examples of your work to date, be they print publications you’ve edited or articles you’ve written.Your key responsibilities:
- Lead our print publishing team, owning the end-to-end planning and production of our monthly members magazine, ensuring delivery on time and to budget
- Commission and edit content from internal and external contributors, mentoring more junior writers on the team
- Oversee the design of the magazine in collaboration with our in-house design team, including input into the planning of bespoke photoshoots.
- Manage numerous stakeholder relationships across the business, ensuring the magazine supports our wider commercial objectives
- Own the development of our magazine content strategy as we expand our product offering
- Help deliver ad-hoc print projects to support wider business activities, as required
- Work closely with our Client Success team to deliver compelling, high-quality advertorials that get results for clients and engage our readers
- Work closely with our Digital Content and Marketing teams to drive awareness of membership perks and online content through magazine content
- Develop and maintain strong professional relationships with commercial partners and gin distillers, leveraging these relationships for future content in print and across the wider business
Requirements
- 5+ years’ experience in lifestyle publishing, with a proven track record of managing the production of a print magazine from end to end
- Highly organised with a meticulous attention to details and deadlines
- Impeccable written communication and editing skills, with experience managing an internal team and external contributors
- A natural-born storyteller, with the ability to combine disparate strands of narrative into a compelling theme or story
- Keen understanding of our core and secondary demographics and the content types that will engage, inspire and entertain them
- A collaborative work style, able to handle multiple and changing priorities
- Entrepreneurial spirit, equally happy bringing lots of ideas to the table and executing on them
- An interest in and enthusiasm for the drinks industry (a passion for craft spirits and cocktails is always a bonus!)
