2025 Ocean Governance Fellowship for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Objectives

The UNNF Ocean Governance Fellowship, supported by The Nippon Foundation, aims to:

• Strengthen the capacity of SIDS Government officials in ocean governance and international legal frameworks.
• Address regional challenges and opportunities related to ocean governance.
• Develop frameworks to:
  • Implement the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and related instruments, including the BBNJ Agreement.
  • Combat climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
  • Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14 (Life Below Water).
  • Support sustainable blue economies, climate resilience, and gender-inclusive policies.

2025 Ocean Governance Fellowship for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Eligibility Criteria & Application Process

Government officials from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) actively working in ocean affairs can apply. Candidates must:

✅ Be between 25 and 45 years old.
✅ Hold a first-level university degree.
✅ Be a citizen of a SIDS.
✅ Work on ocean affairs, UNCLOS implementation, maritime policy, marine conservation, shipping, maritime security, or related fields.

Additionally:

• The proposed study program must directly support the country’s ocean governance policies.
• Candidates must be free from non-Fellowship obligations during the program.
• Applications must include a Nomination & Recommendation Form signed by a Government official confirming the candidate’s role.

Fellowship Conditions

The Fellowship covers:

• Travel expenses
• Stipend payments
• Visa arrangements
• Medical clearance & insurance
• Housing support
