2026 Konrad Adenauer Foundation–SAIIA Scholarships: Overview

The Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS), in partnership with the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) and leading South African universities, is offering the KAS-SAIIA Scholarships 2026.

This fully funded programme provides young graduates the opportunity to pursue a Master’s degree in disciplines such as International Relations, Development Studies, Political Science, Economics, Law, or Journalism, while gaining hands-on research and policy experience through an SAIIA internship.

The scholarship combines academic study with practical training, preparing scholars for impactful leadership roles in governance, diplomacy, policy, and development.

2026 Konrad Adenauer Foundation–SAIIA Scholarships: Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be under 30 years old.

  • Hold an undergraduate degree in a relevant field (Humanities or Social Sciences).

  • Meet the entry requirements for a Master’s degree at:

    • University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg), or

    • University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, or University of the Western Cape (Cape Town).

  • Not have completed the first year of their Master’s programme.

  • Demonstrate strong academic ability and interest in policy, governance, economics, or climate issues.

  • Apply to either Johannesburg OR Cape Town (dual applications not considered).

Fellowship/Program Components

  • Duration: 1 February – 30 November 2026.

  • Combination of academic coursework + internship training.

  • Scholars assigned mentors for skill-building in research, writing, policy analysis, and public engagement.

  • Output-focused programme leading to high-profile career pathways in public/private sectors, think tanks, and NGOs.

  • Completed application form.

  • Cover letter (indicating preferred office – Johannesburg or Cape Town – and university application status).

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV).

  • Academic transcripts and degree certificates.

  • Proof of application/admission to a relevant Master’s programme.

  • Recommendation letters (if required by SAIIA/KAS guidelines).

Selection Criteria

Candidates will be assessed on:

  • Academic excellence in relevant disciplines.

  • Research interest alignment with SAIIA’s thematic programmes.

  • Motivation and potential for leadership in public life.

  • Ability to contribute to policy-relevant research and publications.
