ASL Interpreter

Position Overview:

As an ASL Interpreter Subcontractor, you would work in-person or remotely for lectures and events at universities or colleges. You will be responsible for providing interpreting and transliteration services to deaf and hard-of-hearing students, faculty, and staff on an as-needed basis. You will work closely with Habitat Learn to ensure that deaf and hard-of-hearing students have equal access to academic and extracurricular activities. This is a contract position that requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a thorough understanding of ASL and Deaf culture.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide interpreting and transliteration services to deaf and hard-of-hearing students, faculty, and staff in academic and non-academic settings, including classrooms, meetings, events, and activities, as requested by the university or college.
  • Follow ethical standards of the profession, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to the university or college’s policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of interpreting services provided, including timesheets, invoices, and other necessary documentation.
  • Attend required meetings and trainings, as specified by the university or college.
  • Maintain professional development by staying current with new developments and advancements in the field of ASL interpretation.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in ASL Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or related field preferred.
  • National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or similar certification from a recognized interpreter certification program required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in ASL interpreting in educational settings, with a preference for experience in a university or college setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to professional ethics and standards.
  • Familiarity with disability laws and regulations, particularly those related to equal access and accommodations in higher education.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks and priorities.
