Applicants must:

• Be mid- or senior-career researchers with a proven record of high-quality scientific research, including publications, keynote speaking engagements, or research leadership

• Be currently based overseas with a firm employment offer from a UK university or research institution

• Conduct research within the natural sciences (biological research, biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, physics, etc.)

• Be nominated by the Vice-Chancellor (or equivalent) of the UK host institution

• Be of any nationality (visa sponsorship available via Global Talent Visa fast-track process)

Royal Society Wolfson Fellowships 2025 for Outstanding Research Leaders: Benefits

• Up to £300,000 over five years to support:

  • Salary enhancement (up to 20% of total salary)

  • Research expenses (consumables, travel, small equipment)

  • Research assistance

  • PhD studentship(s)

  • Relocation and visa costs for the fellow and dependents (with flexibility to exceed the cap for well-justified cases)

• Must be nominated by a UK university representative (Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, or Institute Director)

• Complete the nomination process via the Royal Society Grants Office

• Submission of full application via the Flexi-Grant platform

• Meet all eligibility and research area criteria

• Based on research excellence, leadership potential, and alignment with the UK host institution’s strategic priorities

• Applications undergo eligibility checks, peer review, independent assessment, and final panel interview

Restrictions

• Not open to researchers transferring between UK institutions

• Only available to international researchers relocating to the UK

Application Process

1. The Vice-Chancellor (or equivalent) of your prospective UK institution must nominate you by contacting seniorfellowships@royalsociety.org.

2. Upon acceptance of the nomination, you’ll receive a link to complete your full application via Flexi-Grant.

3. Submit the application before the published deadline for the relevant round (there are usually three rounds per year).
