Full-Stack Engineer, Payments Platform at Circle, Remote (Global)

We’re looking for a seasoned full-stack engineer to help evolve and expand Circle’s payments infrastructure. As part of our Payments Platform team, you’ll play a key role in building, maintaining, and scaling the critical systems that power how our communities monetize on Circle.

This role focuses on the infrastructure behind our payment experiences — from integrating new payment providers to ensuring our checkout flows are reliable, secure, and seamless. You’ll be involved in all stages of the development lifecycle, from technical design to deployment and ongoing support.

As a senior engineer, you’ll break down large projects into actionable tasks, lead development efforts, review PRs, and ensure high-quality releases behind feature flags. Your responsibilities will also include bug-fixing and continuous improvement of the codebase. This role requires high technical proficiency and a strong understanding of software development best practices.

What you’ll be doing

• Work autonomously across our Ruby on Rails backend and React front-end.
• Lead complex projects end-to-end, making thoughtful decisions around architecture, design, and product.
• Integrate and scale payment solutions like Stripe, PayPal, and native in-app payment providers.
• Scale our checkout experiences — ensuring they are seamless, reliable, and optimized.
• Build and improve critical monetization features with a strong product focus.
• Collaborate closely with Circle’s leadership and product teams during feature design.
• Partner with designers to deliver seamless, intuitive user experiences.
• Move fast with purpose — balancing iteration speed with technical and UX excellence.

What you’ll need to be successful

• Strong alignment with our values, find our values on our career page if you haven’t read up on them yet
• You are proficient in English (spoken, written, and reading) at a CEFR Level C2 / ILR Level 5.
• 5+ years of experience working as a full-stack engineer on complex web applications.
• Strong proficiency in Ruby on Rails, MySQL/PostgreSQL, ReactJS, TypeScript, CSS/SCSS, and TailwindCSS.
• Deep experience integrating and maintaining payment systems (e.g. Stripe, PayPal) — ideally with multiple providers in a production environment.
• A strong understanding of checkout flows, payment processing, subscriptions lifecycle, and monetization architecture.
• Motivation to understand the business, our users, their requirements, and to deliver results.
• A desire to work in an environment that values speed, autonomy, and accountability.
• Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with a certain level of ambiguity.
• Adaptable and able to change direction quickly when needed.
• Familiar with agile software development principles.
• Experience working on a fully distributed remote team.

Bonus points

• Experience Stripe’s advanced features, such as Connected Accounts, Invoicing, Subscriptions, and Subscription Schedules.
• Previous experience working with community platforms or creator monetization tools.

$130,000 – $140,000 USD per year

The cash compensation range shown is a starting point. In addition to equity, benefits and perks, your cash compensation is subject to an annual review and increase on a once per year basis.
