Fully Funded UC Berkeley Center for African Studies Visiting Fellowships 2026: Overview

The Center for African Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, with support from the Mastercard Foundation, is offering two fully funded Visiting Fellowships for scholars from Africa. This program aims to support mid-career academics or researchers affiliated with African universities, think tanks, or NGOs who seek time and resources to advance independent research and connect with UC Berkeley’s academic community.

Fully Funded UC Berkeley Center for African Studies Visiting Fellowships 2026: Eligibility Criteria

  • Must reside in an African country

  • Must hold a PhD by the time of application

  • Must be affiliated with an African institution (university, research center, or NGO)

  • Must demonstrate potential for meaningful academic contribution

  • Preference will be given to research focusing on themes like youth, labor, livelihoods, displacement, mobility, democracy, technology, and African futures

Documents Required

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)

  • Research proposal (maximum of 2 pages, excluding references)

Important Notes

  • Fellowship duration: One semester (4 months), beginning no later than January 20, 2026

  • Fellowship is non-renewable

  • Fellows are expected to mentor Mastercard Foundation Scholars during their stay
