Tsinghua University Graduate Admissions 2025: Overview

Tsinghua University (THU), one of China’s most prestigious universities, offers Master’s and Doctoral degree programs for international students across 49 schools and departments.

  • Language of Instruction:

    • 30+ programs fully in English

    • Others in Chinese or bilingual

  • Duration:

    • Master’s: 2–3 years

    • PhD: 3–4 years

    • Direct-entry PhD (from Bachelor’s): 4–5 years

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be non-Chinese citizens with a valid ordinary-type passport

  • Hold:

    • A Bachelor’s degree for Master’s programs

    • A Master’s degree for Doctoral programs (or equivalent)

    • Some schools accept Bachelor’s degree holders directly into PhD (see catalog)

  • Provide degree authentication via CSCSE (for overseas degrees) or CSSD (for Chinese mainland degrees)

  • Be in good health and of good character

  • Meet the language requirements (Chinese HSK or English proficiency depending on the program)

  • Fulfill any program-specific requirements (work experience, research plan, etc.)

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit online through the THU Graduate Application System (except Schwarzman Scholars & MBA). Documents include:

  1. Personal Statement (PhD applicants add research plan/experience)

  2. Degree Certificates & Authentication (CSCSE/CSSD)

  3. Academic Transcripts (with GPA certification if not shown)

  4. Language Proficiency Report (HSK/English tests as required)

  5. Two Academic Recommendation Letters (Associate Professor or above)

  6. Passport Bio Page (extra documents for naturalized citizens/former Chinese nationals)

  7. Other program-specific documents

Note: All documents must be in Chinese or English (or notarized translations).

Selection Criteria

  • Academic performance & credentials

  • Language competence (HSK/English scores)

  • Research potential (for PhD applicants)

  • Personal qualities, ethics, and compliance with THU regulations

  • Performance in the comprehensive assessment (interview + material review)

Application Process & Timeline

  • Application period: September 2024 – February 2025 (varies by department)

  • Winter Break: Jan 16 – Feb 12, 2025 (system remains open but slower processing)

  • Fee: RMB 800 (non-refundable)

  • Evaluation:

    • Step 1: Document review

    • Step 2: Comprehensive assessment (often interviews)

    • Step 3: Admission decision → Admission Certificate issued

Costs (RMB Yuan)

  • Application Fee: 800

  • Insurance: 800/year (accident & hospitalization)

  • Accommodation:

    • Double room: 40/bed/day

Accommodation & Campus Life

  • Limited on-campus dorms (apply online, first-come, first-served)

  • Full-time international students only

  • Off-campus housing is required if dorms are unavailable

Visa & Registration

  • Admitted students apply for an X1 student visa at the Chinese embassy/consulate

  • Required documents: Passport, Admission Notice, JW201/202, and medical exam record

  • Must arrive with an ordinary-type passport and an X1 visa

  • Apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days of arrival

  • Registration: Late August / Early September 2025
