General International Undergraduate Scholarships 2026: Overview

The University of Alberta (U of A) offers a wide range of scholarships to support exceptional international students entering undergraduate programs. With over CAD $52 million awarded annually, one in five first-year students receives a scholarship. These awards recognize academic excellence, leadership, and community involvement.

Scholarships fall into two main categories:

  • Admission-based scholarships: No separate application required.

  • Application-based scholarships: Require an additional scholarship application by the stated deadline.

Eligibility

  • Must be an international student applying for admission to an undergraduate degree program at the University of Alberta.

  • Eligibility for admission-based awards is determined automatically based on high school admission average.

  • To apply for application-based scholarships, candidates must first apply for admission to an undergraduate degree program.

  • Applicants must hold or be eligible to obtain a Canadian study permit (student visa).

Benefits

Scholarship amounts vary by category and award:

Admission-Based Scholarships:

  • International Admission Scholarship: Up to CAD $5,000.

  • Regional Excellence Scholarship: Up to CAD $5,000.

  • Gold Standard Scholarship: Up to CAD $6,000 (awarded to the top 5% of students per faculty).

Application-Based Scholarships:

  • President’s International Distinction Scholarship: Up to CAD $120,000 (payable over 4 years).

  • Chan Pang Kuen Memorial International Distinction Scholarship: Up to CAD $120,000 (over 4 years).

  • International Leader Scholarship: Up to CAD $15,000.

  • May Quon Undergraduate Scholarship: Up to CAD $100,000 (over 4 years) for Chinese and Hong Kong citizens.

  • Cora Martinson International Scholarship: Up to CAD $56,000 (over 4 years).

  • U of A Global Citizen Scholarship (for IB Diploma Students): Up to CAD $53,000 per year (for a maximum of 4 years).

Application Requirements

For Admission-Based Scholarships:

  • No separate application is required.

  • You are automatically considered once you apply for admission to an undergraduate program.

For Application-Based Scholarships:

  • Apply for admission to an undergraduate degree program first.

  • Complete the single scholarship application form before the deadline.

  • Provide information on your academic achievements, leadership, and community involvement.

Application Process

  1. Apply for admission to any undergraduate degree program at the University of Alberta.

  2. Submit the scholarship application form (for application-based awards).

  3. Selection will be based on academic merit, leadership, and extracurricular accomplishments.

  4. Successful candidates will receive notification starting in early winter.
