Overview

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) International Student Scholarship is a merit- and need-based financial aid funded by the Bavarian State Government. It supports international students at TUM who are not eligible for BAföG and need financial assistance during their studies. The scholarship is awarded once per semester, but students can reapply every semester.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be international students not eligible for BAföG due to nationality (§8 BAföG)

  • Be enrolled at TUM

    • From 3rd semester in Bachelor’s programmes

    • From 2nd semester in Master’s programmes

    • (1st semester Master’s allowed if Bachelor’s was completed at TUM)

  • Have good academic performance

  • Demonstrate financial need

    • Based on student necessity levels defined in BAföG (§13, §13a)

    • Consideration of parents’ or spouse’s income

  • Not submit their Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis before:

    • 30 June (summer semester)

    • 31 December (winter semester)

  • Note: Scholarship is not paid during leave of absence

Financial Need Assessment

  • Based on:

    • Student’s personal income

    • Parents’ income (or spouse’s income, if applicable)

  • No financial need is recognized if monthly income exceeds BAföG-defined student living requirements

Application Period (Summer Semester 2026)

  • To be announced

  • Results released:

    • Mid-July (summer semester)

    • Mid-December (winter semester)

Required Documents (PDF Uploads)

  • Motivational Letter (100–200 words, English or German)

    • Must clearly explain financial situation

  • CV / Résumé

  • TUM Grade Report (from TUMonline)

  • Two Recommendation Letters

    • Not older than one semester

  • Proof of Applicant’s Income

    • Bank statements for the last 6 months

    • Explanation of incoming payments (salary, parental support, scholarship, loan, etc.)

    • Supporting documents if applicable (contracts, scholarship letters, BAföG notice, etc.)

  • Proof of Parents’ or Spouse’s Income

    • Not older than one year

    • Certified German translation required if not in English or German

⚠️ Only complete applications are accepted.

Application Process

  • Application is submitted online

  • Link to the Summer Semester 2026 application form will be published during the application period

  • Recommendation letters must be submitted before the deadline:

    • 15 May (summer semester)

    • 15 November (winter semester)

Important Notes

  • Scholarship is not automatic – you must apply every semester

  • Late or incomplete applications are not considered

  • Special information is available for students studying with a child via Studentenhilfe München
