The Strengthening Community Journalism and Human Rights Advocacy in Northern Nigeria (SCOJA) Fellowship, organized by HumAngle Foundation, is now open for applications. The fellowship is designed to empower community journalists and advocates with tools and techniques to improve hyperlocal reporting, human rights advocacy, and accountability journalism in Northern Nigeria. It includes a 3-day in-person training in Kaduna, Plateau, and Borno, followed by a 6-month mentorship and reporting program.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be journalists or advocates focusing on community, town, or state-level reporting.
- Reside in one of the target states: Benue, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau, Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Kaduna, or Kano.
- Show strong interest in community-led change and stakeholder engagement.
- Be willing to commit to 6 months of consistent participation (producing reports and engaging stakeholders).
- Women are strongly encouraged to apply.

Fellowship Components
- 3-Day Training (Kaduna, Plateau, Borno) covering:

- SGBV reporting techniques.
- Accountability and investigative journalism.
- Climate change and conflict-sensitive reporting.
- Solutions journalism and inclusive storytelling.
- Data-driven journalism, civic engagement, and fact-checking.
- Countering misinformation and navigating legal challenges.
- Collaborating with CBOs, government, and development partners.
- 6-Month Post-Training Period
- Fellows will produce at least 3 reports and 1 advocacy initiative.
- Monthly activity reports.
- Virtual sessions, peer exchanges, and mentorship.
- Step-down training to colleagues in their organisations.
