In partnership with the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH), the British Council is offering two 12-month postdoctoral fellowships starting January 2026. These fellowships are open to early-career researchers from ODA-recipient countries where the British Council operates. Fellows will spend 10 months at IASH and 2 months in their home countries focusing on knowledge exchange.

British Council 90th Anniversary Research Fellowships at the University of Edinburgh (2026 Intake): Eligibility

  • Must be based in an ODA-recipient country where the British Council operates.

  • Must have a PhD awarded between 2018 and 2025 (flexible for those with career breaks).

  • Must not hold a permanent academic position or have previously held a fellowship at IASH.

  • Must demonstrate a clear connection to British Council’s strategic themes (Arts, Education, English, cultural diplomacy, peacebuilding, etc.).
