The University of Manchester’s Equity and Merit Scholarships are designed to empower talented, financially disadvantaged students from the Global South to pursue a master’s degree that contributes to sustainable development goals. The scholarships support students committed to solving pressing challenges in their home countries and promoting long-term impact through education.
Application Deadline
Scholarship Application Window: 1–31 August 2025
Academic Application Window: 1–31 October 2025
There are 30 scholarships available:
• 20 full-time, on-campus scholarships (1-year duration)
• 10 part-time, online scholarships (3–5 years duration)

Equity and Merit Scholarships for African Master’s Students at the University of Manchester – 2026/2027: Eligibility Criteria
• Be a resident citizen of: Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, or Zimbabwe
• Not previously studied outside Africa (short-term training ≤6 months is acceptable)
• Have at least 2 years of relevant work experience
• Hold a bachelor’s degree with excellent results (top 10% of class, graduated before September 2024)
• Demonstrate a strong commitment to return home and create positive change
• Have a clear plan for how studying at Manchester will benefit your career and community
Documents Required
• Proof of citizenship/residency
• Degree certificate and transcript
• Personal statement
• CV/resume detailing work experience
• Two references
• Other documents as required by the chosen course
Important Notes
• Women and applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply
• Full-time scholarship includes tuition, return airfare, visa, and living costs
• Part-time scholarships cover full tuition only
• Some courses are available only for distance learning
Selection Process
• August 2025: Submit scholarship application
• September 2025: Eligibility checks
• October 2025: Submit academic application
• Nov 2025 – May 2026: Review process
• June 2026: Final results released
• September 2026: Academic year begins
