The University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Science is inviting outstanding international students to apply for the 2026 University Recommended Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship. This scholarship is fully funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and aims to foster future global leaders who can act as bridges between Japan and their home countries.
Fully Funded MEXT Scholarship 2026 Eligibility

Must be a citizen of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan (excluding Japanese nationals, unless they plan to renounce Japanese citizenship).

Must be born on or after April 2, 1991.

Must meet the academic requirements to enter the Master’s or Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo.

GPA of 2.30 or above based on the MEXT scale.

Must meet language proficiency in English (e.g., TOEFL iBT 72+, IELTS 5.5+) or Japanese (JLPT N2 or higher).

Must be in good physical and mental health.

Must be able to arrive in Japan around October 1, 2026, as designated by the university.

Applicants residing in Japan or applying for other MEXT scholarships in the same year are ineligible.
Fully Funded MEXT Scholarship 2026 Benefits

Monthly stipend:

144,000 JPY for Master’s students

145,000 JPY for Doctoral students

An additional 2,000–3,000 JPY for students studying in specific regions

One economy-class round-trip international airfare (to and from Japan)

A research plan in a field related to your previous study, and offered by the university.

Restrictions

Military personnel and employees of the military are not eligible.

Applicants planning long-term fieldwork outside Japan during the scholarship period are ineligible.

Past MEXT scholars must meet specific conditions to reapply.

Students on leave or planning to receive other scholarships during the MEXT period are disqualified.
