Fully Funded MEXT University Recommendation (UR) Scholarship in Japan 2026:Overview

The MEXT University Recommendation (UR) Scholarship is a prestigious, fully funded opportunity provided by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT). Offered in partnership with Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU), this scholarship supports outstanding international students aiming to pursue graduate studies in Japan. It covers tuition, living expenses, travel costs, and more.

Fully Funded MEXT University Recommendation (UR) Scholarship in Japan 2026: Eligibility

Applicants must:

• Apply and gain admission to APU Graduate School for September 2026 enrollment.

• Intend to study in Japan from overseas.

• Be nationals of a MEXT-designated country.

• Be born on or after April 2, 1991.

• Have a GPA of at least 2.30/3.00 at their most recent university.

• Hold a “Student” visa status upon arrival in Japan.

Not Eligible If:

• Currently serving in the military.

• Already recipients of other unapproved scholarships.

• Previous MEXT recipients (unless 3+ years have passed since last award).

• Full admission fee & tuition fee coverage

• Monthly stipend of 144,000 JPY (approx. $950) for living expenses (includes housing)

• Medical insurance

• Books and instructional materials support

• Round-trip airfare (economy class) between home country and Japan

Application Requirements

• Complete APU online application for graduate admission

• Valid English proficiency test scores (tests taken after March 2024)

• Academic transcripts & GPA verification

• Additional documents required by APU and MEXT (see official guidelines)

Selection Process

1. Submit application to APU by November 12, 2025.

2. APU screens applicants and recommends eligible candidates to MEXT.

3. Applicants are notified of APU’s admission and nomination decision.

4. Final scholarship award decisions are announced by June 2026 (subject to MEXT schedule).

Application Deadline:  November 12, 2025 (for September 2026 enrollment).
