The Cyber Security, Privacy and Trust PhD at the University of Edinburgh prepares researchers to tackle global cybersecurity challenges through advanced study and innovation. Fully Funded PhD in Cyber Security, Privacy and Trust 2026: Eligibility

Applicants must have:

• A UK 2:1 honours degree (or international equivalent) in computer science, mathematics, linguistics, or a related discipline.

• A Master’s degree (recommended) in information security, cybersecurity, or a closely related field.

• Proof of English language proficiency, such as:

  • IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall, minimum 6.0 in each component

  • TOEFL iBT: 92 overall, minimum 20 in each section

  • C1 Advanced (CAE) or C2 Proficiency (CPE): 176 overall, minimum 169 per component

Programme Components

The PhD runs for three years (full-time) or four to six years (part-time).

• Year 1: Probationary year – submit a detailed research proposal and attend specialised training courses.

• Years 2–3: Conduct independent research, publish findings, and prepare your thesis.

• Final Stage: Submit your thesis and attend a viva (oral defence).

Students may also engage in internships, seminars, and collaborative research with industry and academic partners.
