Fully Funded University of Canberra Research Scholarships 2025: Overview

The University of Canberra Research Scholarships offer outstanding PhD candidates an opportunity to undertake full-time Higher Degree by Research (HDR) studies with full financial support. These scholarships are highly competitive and awarded to applicants with exceptional academic records, strong research proposals, and alignment with the University’s strategic themes. Scholarships are available for both domestic and international students, and include stipends and, where applicable, tuition fee waivers.

  • Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend Scholarships

  • University of Canberra HDR Stipend Scholarships

  • Industry Co-funded Scholarships (aligned with sustainability and other strategic themes)

  • Faculty-Managed and Other Research Scholarships

Fully Funded University of Canberra Research Scholarships 2025: Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be domestic (Australian citizen, permanent resident, NZ citizen) or international student

  • Must not have held an Australian Government-funded research scholarship for more than 6 months

  • Must be applying for or currently enrolled in a PhD program at the University of Canberra

  • Current PhD candidates must have:

    • Achieved Confirmation of Candidature, and

    • Completed less than two years of study (EFT)

Priority Consideration

Scholarship priority will be given to applicants who:

  • Hold a First-Class Honours or equivalent

  • Have a Master’s by Coursework with at least 25% research and a minimum result of 80%

  • Are enrolled in the National Industry PhD Program

  • Are Indigenous Australian applicants

Documents Required

  • HDR Admission application via the HDR Application Portal

  • Separate Research Scholarship application (available after the HDR application)

  • Academic transcripts

  • Research proposal

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)

  • Any publications (if applicable)

Funding

  • Stipend of AUD $36,225 per annum (tax-free, 2025 rate)

  • International tuition fee sponsorship may be included

  • Duration: Up to 3.5 years

  • Offshore students begin receiving stipends once they arrive onshore in Canberra; back payment applies

Selection Process

  1. Applications are reviewed for eligibility and completion

  2. Faculties rank applicants based on academic merit, strategic alignment, proposal quality, and research experience

  3. The University Research Scholarship Committee makes final awards based on a ranking Order of Merit

Application Process

  • Apply via the HDR Application Portal

  • Once the HDR Admission is submitted, access and complete the separate Research Scholarship application

  • Current PhD students should also apply through the same portal
