Gilman International Scholarship Overview

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship enables U.S. undergraduate students with limited financial means to study or intern abroad, promoting mutual understanding and global skills essential for national security and economic growth. Managed by the Institute of International Education (IIE) since 2001, the program empowers students of all backgrounds to explore international opportunities.

Gilman International Scholarship Eligibility

  • Must be a U.S. citizen

  • Must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the application period or be able to show proof of Pell Grant eligibility for the study abroad term

  • Must be applying to a credit-bearing study or internship abroad program

  • Must apply to a program in a country not under U.S. travel advisory Level 3 or 4

Gilman International Scholarship Benefits

  • Up to $5,000 in funding (with potential for more through supplemental awards)

  • Exposure to diverse cultures and global perspectives

  • Gain skills in foreign languages, global networks, and leadership

  • Boosts academic, professional, and personal growth

  • Encourages students to share their experience through service projects

Gilman International Scholarship Application Requirements

  • Three essays:

    1. Statement of Purpose – Why you want to study abroad and how it will benefit your career and education

    2. Building Mutual Understanding – How you’ll engage with the local culture and represent the U.S.

    3. Follow-on Service Project – Plan to promote the Gilman Program and international education

  • Transcript and proof of Pell Grant eligibility

  • Program acceptance or pending acceptance documentation

Gilman International Scholarship Selection Criteria

  • Academic preparedness and commitment

  • Diversity of background and underrepresented groups

  • Program impact on career and academic goals

  • Articulation of service project and cultural integration plan

  • Financial need and feasibility of the budget

Gilman International Scholarship Application Process & Timeline

  • Application typically opens twice a year (Spring and Fall cycles)

  • For Spring 2026 programs, applications are expected to open by August 2025

  • For Summer or Fall 2026, apply by March 2026

  • Follow up with interviews or advisor guidance if required by your institution
