Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship 2025/2026 Overview

The Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship offers fully funded study opportunities for international students to study in Japan. The program is available for undergraduate, graduate, research, teacher training, and specialized studies. It covers tuition, monthly stipends, and round-trip airfare.

There are two main application routes:

  • Embassy Recommendation (via the Japanese embassy/consulate in your country)

  • University Recommendation (via a Japanese university)

Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship 2025/2026 Benefits

  • Monthly Allowance:

    • Â¥143,000–145,000 (Research)

    • Â¥117,000 (Teacher Training)

    • Â¥242,000 (YLP)

  • Tuition: Fully exempted

  • Travel: Round-trip airfare covered

  • Japanese Language Training: Up to 1 year (if required)

Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship 2025/2026 Eligibility

General Requirements:

  • Strong academic background

  • Meet age limits and education level for your chosen program

  • Willingness to learn Japanese and adapt to life in Japan

Age and Education (Examples):

  • Research: Under 35; completed or about to complete 16 years of education

  • Undergraduate: Between 17–25; completed 12 years of schooling

  • Teacher Training: Under 35; at least 5 years teaching experience

  • YLP: Under 40; working professionals with leadership potential

Required Exams (Embassy Route)

  • Research & Teacher Training: Japanese & English

  • Undergraduate: Japanese, English, Mathematics + 2 Science Subjects

  • College of Technology: Japanese, English, Math, Physics or Chemistry

  • Specialized Training: Japanese, English, Math

  • Japanese Studies: Japanese only

Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship 2025/2026 Application Process

1. Embassy Recommendation

  • Apply through the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country

  • Includes written exams, interviews, and document screening

  • Deadlines and fields of study vary by country

  • Selection and document submission are handled locally

2. University Recommendation

  • Apply through a partner university in Japan

  • University nominates candidates to MEXT

  • Mostly available for research, undergraduate, and Japanese studies

  • Applicants usually arrive in September/October

  • Check if the university has a MEXT recommendation quota
