Japanese Government (MEXT) Undergraduate Scholarship 2026 Overview

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan offers fully funded scholarships to international students who wish to pursue undergraduate studies at Japanese universities beginning in April 2026. The scholarship includes one year of preparatory education followed by a four- to five-year undergraduate program, depending on the chosen field.

Japanese Government (MEXT) Undergraduate Scholarship 2026 Eligibility

  • Must have the nationality of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan

  • Must be born on or after April 2, 2001

  • Must have completed 12 years of education or equivalent by March or August 2026

  • Must be willing to learn Japanese and pursue studies in Japanese

  • Must submit a health certificate proving fitness for study

  • Must be able to arrive in Japan between April 1 and April 7, 2026 (or by the university’s designated date for fall admission)

  • Must obtain a “Student” visa before arriving in Japan

Japanese Government (MEXT) Undergraduate Scholarship 2026 Benefits

  • Full tuition waiver for entrance exams, admission, and university fees

  • Monthly allowance of 117,000 yen (plus regional allowance of 2,000 or 3,000 yen)

  • Round-trip airfare (economy class) from home country to Japan


Fellowship/Program Components

  • One year of intensive Japanese language and preparatory education (except for direct placement students)

  • Full undergraduate program in Japanese universities (4 to 6 years depending on field)

  • University placement determined by MEXT

  • Direct placement possible for applicants with sufficient language proficiency


Application Requirements

  • Completed application form (2026 version)

  • Academic transcripts and graduation certificate(s)

  • Recommendation letter from school official

  • Medical certificate (MEXT format)

  • Certificate of enrollment or language proficiency (if applicable)

  • Two sets of all required documents (1 original, 1 copy)


Selection Criteria

  • First Screening by Japanese embassy/consulate (documents, written exams, interview)

  • Second Screening by MEXT

  • Final selection based on academic achievement, exam results, and program fit

  • University placement decisions are final and non-negotiable
