Director of Talent Diversity and Development 

The USA TODAY NETWORK is seeking a Director of Talent Diversity and Development to help grow and retain our best-in-class team of journalists. This director will be aligned with the Local News division of our organization and reports to the Operations Editor.

The successful candidate is a journalist who has extensive hiring experience in journalism and understands how to find and recruit talent that represents the best across disciplines at all skill levels. This person must be adept at partnering with our Content Recruiting Manager, HR business partners, hiring managers and Local News leadership to build and maintain a pipeline that feeds our vast network of news organizations.

Our work with new hires doesn’t end when they’ve joined the team. The Director of Talent Diversity and Development works closely with our News Learning and Development leaders to identify skill gaps in the labor pool and among our teams, and prepare team members to level up in their careers.

This individual also takes a lead role in ensuring that we are further diversifying our newsrooms. To accomplish this and other goals, the Director of Talent Diversity and Development will build relationships with the recruiting team, universities, professional organizations and our own team members to discover talent.

This position is remote and can be based anywhere in the US, except for Alaska and Hawaii. If you live near one of our local newsrooms, you may have the option to use that as a base of operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategies and initiatives that support the editorial talent acquisition process and quality of hiring.
  • Partner with the hiring managers, Content Recruiting Manager, HR business partners, News Learning and Development leaders and Local News leaders to ensure a healthy pipeline of internal and external talent is built against future recruitment needs.
  • Monitor compensation trends and make recommendations about them as needed to Local News leadership.
  • Leverage the company’s tools, processes, protocols and knowledge to recruit experienced candidates.
  • Work with internal partners to oversee internship programs.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree, and at least 5 years’ experience in journalism.
  • At least 2+ years of specialized recruiting experience in media or digital environment.
  • Strong stakeholder focus and effective use of consultative approach with internal partners.
  • General knowledge of recruitment/hiring laws and practices.
  • Strong knowledge base and prior experience in full life-cycle experienced hire recruitment.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to and embrace new technology.
  • High volume recruiting experience. Must be able to manage a workload of 20+ requisitions at a time.
  • Deep experience in leveraging LinkedIn, social media and other platforms for recruiting.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve complex recruitment and hiring issues with minimum guidance.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer background check.

The annualized base salary for this role will range between $80,000 and $161,000.  Variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, location, and union representation, if applicable. ​
