Job Title: Principal Software Engineering Manager
Overview
The Identity engineering team builds and manages Microsoft’s online identity solutions, developing the adaptive identity and network access controls to secure access to any app or resource for every user or digital workload. We pursue big ideas that power transformational advances in online security and user management. Our work can be found in internet scale online services, the Windows operating system and most phones and handheld devices. Identity engineering employees have deep technical experience, customer insights, and a clear point of view that comes from first-hand, very large-scale experience. Our team is seeking an experienced Principal Software Engineering Manager to join us as we create and deliver mission critical services and processes to enable Microsoft’s online presence. You will have the opportunity to design and develop creative, compelling, and cutting-edge systems that support our world-wide operations. You will develop software and services at scale, innovating on the latest technologies as the earliest adopters while mentoring other team members.

Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 2+ years of experience leading an engineering team
Other Requirements:
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Additional or Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 4+ years people management experience.
- Proficient in one or more of the high level programming languages: C/C++, Java/C#, Python
- Experience Leading Code & Design Reviews
- Experience with Front-End Tech stack and Full-Stack development
- One or more of the following skills:
- Proficient in design, building and operating large scale distributed systems that can sustain rapid growth.
- Technical leadership, experience in high performing, agile teams
- Drive changes across multiple teams within the company
- Experience in any modern continuous delivery/deployment systems
Software Engineering M5 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 – $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 – $282,200 per year.

Responsibilities
- This is a broad cross-team role with high visibility, collaborating with multiple teams across Microsoft.
- Lead the architecture, design and implementation of services for extremely high scale, throughput, durability, and low latency.
- Innovate and make service deployment and maintenance an efficient well-oiled machine that provides excellent reliability with minimal manual engineer intervention.
- Lead the definition of requirements, key performance indicator (KPIs), priorities and planning of engineering deliverables.
- Mentor and grow the team with a good mix of senior, mid-level, and junior talent.
