Overview

The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) supports experienced professionals from developing countries who seek a master’s degree in development-related fields. The scholarship finances major study-abroad expenses, with the condition that recipients return home after graduation to contribute to national development.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be citizens of a World Bank member developing country

  • Not hold dual citizenship with any developed country

  • Be in good health

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree earned at least 3 years before the deadline

  • Be employed in a paid, full-time, development-related position at the time of applying

  • Have at least three years of relevant, paid, development-related work experience (within the last six years; part-time roles may count as per FAQ)

  • Hold an admission letter for the MA in Development Studies (ISS)

  • Note: Mundus MAPP is not eligible for this scholarship

Program Components

Application Requirements

  • Proof of nationality

  • Bachelor’s certificate

  • Work experience documentation

  • Admission letter to ISS MA in Development Studies

  • Online submission of all required documents

  • Only one master’s programme application allowed (multiple entries = disqualification)

Selection typically considers:

  • Eligibility status

  • Professional experience in development

  • Academic background

  • Commitment to returning home and contributing to national development

  • ISS nomination status

Application Process

Step 1: Confirm that you meet all eligibility criteria
Step 2: Apply for academic admission to ISS MA in Development Studies by 1 March 2026
Step 3: Wait for ISS Admissions Office to contact shortlisted candidates

  • ISS can nominate only 30 applicants
    Step 4: Submit your JJ/WBGSP online scholarship application

  • All documents must be uploaded online (no email/post submissions)

Important Dates

  • ISS Admission Deadline: 1 March 2026

  • JJ/WBGSP Scholarship Deadline: 15 May 2026 (for nominated applicants only)

  • Expected Outcome: July 2026
