Rhodes Scholarships for West Africa 2025: Overview

The Rhodes Scholarships for West Africa offer an incredible opportunity for exceptional students from the region to pursue fully-funded postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford. Each year, three scholarships are awarded to eligible candidates from Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Saint Helena, Senegal, Sierra Leone, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Togo.

This prestigious program was launched in 2017, with the first West African Rhodes Scholar beginning studies at Oxford in 2018. It also operates in conjunction with the Oxford-Morland-West Africa Graduate Scholarship.

Rhodes Scholarships for West Africa 2025: Eligibility

• Must be a citizen or legal permanent resident of one of the 17 eligible West African countries

• Must have completed (or be on track to complete) an undergraduate degree with a strong academic record

• Must be between 18 and 24 years old by 1 October 2026, OR under 27 if you completed your first undergraduate degree after 1 October 2025

• Must demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, integrity, and commitment to service

• Must meet the English language proficiency requirements for the University of Oxford

• Completed online application

• Birth certificate or valid ID for proof of age and citizenship

• At least five referees, including academic and character references

• Proposed course of study must be among those approved by the Rhodes Trust
