Overview
The Aga Khan Foundation’s International Scholarship Programme (AKF ISP) provides an opportunity for outstanding scholars from selected countries* who lack other means of financing their studies to pursue postgraduate education. Established in 1969 by His Highness the Aga Khan, the AKF ISP has supported more than 1,000 students to date.
Award recipients are selected through a global, annual, and highly competitive application process. The AKF ISP offers a limited number of new awards each cycle. The 2025-2026 award cycle will open in early January 2025 and close on 31 March 2025.
The Aga Khan Foundation’s International Scholarship Program 2025/2026 Eligible Countries
- The AKF ISP is currently available in:
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Kenya, Kyrgyz Republic, Madagascar, Mozambique, Pakistan, Syria, Tajikistan, Tanzania, and Uganda. - In Canada, France, Portugal, and the USA, applications are accepted only from individuals who are originally from one of the countries listed above.
- AKF ISP is not available to students intending to study in the United Kingdom.
The Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Program 2025/2026 Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for an AKF ISP award, applicants must:
- Have excellent academic records.
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree or possess equivalent training/professional experience.
- Demonstrate genuine financial need.**
- Present a reliable, multi-source funding plan that covers all years of study.**
- Be admitted to a reputable postgraduate institution.***
- Be starting the first year of their postgraduate programme.****
- Exhibit strong leadership potential, professional experience, extracurricular and/or entrepreneurial achievements, and volunteer contributions.
💡 Preference is given to young professionals under 30 years of age.
Additional Notes
- Awards are need-based, but applicants should consider the AKF ISP as a last resort and secure multiple sources of funding to reduce their financial request.
- Master’s programmes are prioritized, but applications for PhD studies are also considered.***
- Local/regional universities and distance learning programmes are eligible for ISP funding, provided the course maintains a high standard of quality.
- Part-time programmes and short-term courses are not eligible.
- Applicants must be entering the first year of their postgraduate programme.****
- Students who have already enrolled in or commenced their postgraduate studies are not eligible.
