Sainsbury Scholarship for Black Visual Artists in Rome 2026: Overview

The Sainsbury Scholarship for Fine Arts is a prestigious six-month residency program at the British School at Rome (BSR), offered in partnership with the Linbury Trust. Scheduled from 7 January to 30 June 2026, this opportunity is designed to support exceptional early-career visual artists. The program particularly focuses on increasing the representation of artists from Black African, Caribbean, and Black British backgrounds within the visual arts and at the BSR.

Sainsbury Scholarship for Black Visual Artists in Rome 2026: Eligibility Criteria

• Must be an early-career visual artist working in any medium
• Must identify as Black African, Caribbean, or Black British
• Should demonstrate a strong artistic portfolio and creative vision
• Open to applicants underrepresented in the arts and at the BSR

• Artist’s statement
• Reference letters (if required by BSR)
