Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships 2025: Overview

The Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships support talented and motivated students from eligible low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries to pursue a full-time taught Master’s degree at a UK university. Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), this scholarship enables scholars to acquire the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development. It is targeted at students who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.

Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships 2025: Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of, or have refugee status in, an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person.

  • Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.

  • Be available to start academic studies in the UK by September/October of the academic year.

  • Demonstrate financial need (unable to afford UK study without the scholarship).

Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships 2025: Benefits

The scholarship covers:

  • Full tuition fees (paid directly to the university).

  • Approved airfare from the home country to the UK and return after the award.

  • Monthly stipend: £1,378 (2025–2026 rate).

  • Warm clothing allowance (where applicable).

  • Study travel grant for UK/overseas study-related travel.

  • Family support: £590/month for the first child, and £146/month for the second and third child (if under 16 and living in the UK with the scholar).

  • Disability support: Full assessment and additional financial aid for eligible scholars with disabilities.

Fellowship/Program Components

  • A wide range of UK universities and courses under international development themes.

  • Opportunities to build networks, partnerships, and skills for global impact.

  • Support for scholars to contribute back to their home country after studying.

Application Requirements

  • Completed application via a nominating agency or selected NGO/charitable body.

  • Academic transcripts and references.

  • Proof of citizenship/residency in an eligible country.

  • Evidence of financial need.

Selection Criteria

  • Academic merit.

  • Quality of the study plan and its alignment with development priorities.

  • Potential impact of the scholar’s work on their home country.

Application Process

  1. Apply to a nominating agency (main route) or an approved NGO/charitable body.

  2. Each nominator has its own selection process and deadlines.

  3. Nominators forward shortlisted candidates to the CSC.

  4. Final selection is made from the pool of nominations.

  5. Direct applications to the CSC are not accepted.

Important Dates

  • Applications Open: September (annually).

  • Applications Close: October (annually; check nominator deadlines).

  • Results Announced: By July of the following year.
