The maintenance allowance, currently £21,897 per year, is calibrated to the University of Cambridge’s own estimate of what students need to cover reasonable living costs in Cambridge. It is genuinely livable, particularly in a city where students have access to subsidised college accommodation.

What Degrees Are Covered

Gates Cambridge Scholarships cover:

• PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)
• MSc or MLitt (one-year and two-year research degrees)
• MPhil (one-year Master’s by research or taught)

Any subject area at the University of Cambridge is eligible. There are no subject restrictions — Gates Cambridge Scholars span the full range of Cambridge disciplines including STEM, social sciences, humanities, law, medicine, policy, and the arts.

Who Can Apply: Eligibility

Nationality: You must be a citizen of any country other than the United Kingdom. UK citizens are not eligible for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship.

Academic level: You must apply for a full-time postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge. This includes PhD, MPhil, MSc, and MLitt programmes.

Already at Cambridge: Current Cambridge students wishing to apply for a further degree at Cambridge are eligible.

Academic standard: Gates Cambridge is one of the most selective scholarships in the world. The realistic baseline for a competitive applicant is a degree equivalent to a First Class (or very strong upper second class) from a highly regarded institution, with evidence of research potential, strong references, and a compelling post-study vision.

The Selection Criteria: What Cambridge Is Looking For

The selection process is run by the Gates Cambridge Trust and looks for four qualities. Understanding these deeply, not just ticking boxes, is what distinguishes winning applications from strong but unsuccessful ones.

1. Outstanding Intellectual Ability

Gates Cambridge Scholars are not just good students. They are people who think in ways that are genuinely original, who demonstrate intellectual curiosity that goes beyond what coursework demands, who have asked and pursued questions at the frontier of their field.

Your academic record is evidence but not proof of this. Your references, your research proposal (for PhD applicants), and the intellectual substance of your statement of purpose all contribute to the panel’s assessment of your intellectual quality.

2. Reason to Choose Cambridge

Why Cambridge specifically? This is more than asking you to list Cambridge’s rankings or facilities. The panel wants to understand why Cambridge is the uniquely right place for what you want to do. What specific faculty, research group, library collection, laboratory, or intellectual community at Cambridge is necessary, not just convenient, for your work?

The weaker version of this answer is: “Cambridge is a great university, and I want to be part of its community.” The stronger version names specific academics you want to work with, specific methodological traditions Cambridge is particularly strong in, or specific resources (the Cambridge Digital Library, the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, the Centre for Geopolitics) that are essential to your research.

3. Commitment to Improving the Lives of Others

Gates Cambridge Scholars are not just brilliant researchers — they are people who see their work as connected to the world beyond academia. This does not mean you need to be working on poverty reduction or vaccine development (though many scholars do). It means your work has a genuine connection to improving human lives, through knowledge generation, through policy influence, through creative work that expands understanding, through technical innovation that solves real problems.

Articulate this connection clearly and honestly. Forced connections are worse than no connection. The most compelling answers show organic, authentic links between your intellectual interests and your concern for human flourishing.

4. Leadership

Gates Cambridge defines leadership as more than holding positions. A leader in their framework is someone who develops others — who uses their influence to improve the world around them rather than simply advancing their own position. What have you done that demonstrates this? How have you used your skills, knowledge, or position to help others grow, to build something, to strengthen your community?

The Application: Two Rounds

Gates Cambridge operates through two application rounds, corresponding to the University of Cambridge’s own application deadlines.

Round 1 (US applicants): Earlier deadline, typically October of the year before entry. This round is specifically for US citizens and permanent residents.

Round 2 (All other applicants): Deadline in December of the year before entry. This round covers all applicants outside the US.

For 2027 entry:

• Round 1 (US): Watch for the specific October 2026 deadline on the Gates Cambridge website
• Round 2 (International): Typically December 2026

Both your Cambridge course application and your Gates Cambridge statement must be submitted by the relevant round deadline. Late submissions are not considered.

You apply to the Gates Cambridge Scholarship through your Cambridge University admissions application; there is no separate Gates Cambridge portal. Within the Cambridge application, you complete an additional statement specifically for the scholarship.

The Gates Cambridge Statement

Within your Cambridge application, Gates Cambridge applicants complete a Gates Cambridge Statement in addition to the standard application statement. This statement directly addresses the selection criteria and is your primary opportunity to make the case for why you should be a Gates Cambridge Scholar.

The statement is 3,000–4,000 characters (not words — characters). Every sentence must earn its place.

Strong statements:

• Tell a specific, real story — not a generic account of how you became interested in your field
• Make the Cambridge connection concrete and specific
• Connect intellectual work to impact without being formulaic
• Demonstrate the kind of leadership that reflects character rather than resume-building
• Sound like a specific person, not a scholarship template
