A.S. Hornby Educational Trust Scholarship 2026: Overview

The A.S. Hornby Educational Trust provides fully funded Master’s scholarships to strengthen English language teaching capacity in low- and middle-income countries. The award supports up to 10 experienced TESOL professionals to study the MEd TESOL at the University of Exeter (September 2026 entry).

A.S. Hornby Educational Trust Scholarship 2026: Eligibility

You must meet all the following criteria:

  • Be a resident of, and currently working in, a country classified as:

    • Least Developed

    • Low Income

    • Lower Middle Income

    • Upper Middle Income
      (According to the OECD DAC list)

  • Have a minimum 3 years of full-time TESOL teaching or related professional experience after your first degree.

  • Hold an undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK Upper Second Class (2:1) or higher.

  • Must not hold:

    • A doctoral degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, English, or related fields.

    • A Master’s degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, English, or related fields from a UK university.

  • Scholarship is only for the MEd TESOL programme — not for PGCert or PGDip.

Fully funded package covering:

  • Full university tuition fees

  • Monthly stipend for living and accommodation

  • Grants for approved additional costs

  • UK Visa fees

  • NHS (health insurance) fees

  • Return international flight to the UK

Application Requirements

  • Completed Hornby Scholarship Application Form

  • Evidence of:

    • Teaching/Professional TESOL experience

    • Academic qualifications

    • Impact potential in English language teaching

  • Shortlisted candidates must later apply to the MEd TESOL programme at Exeter (instructions provided after shortlisting).

Selection Criteria

Applicants are assessed based on:

  • Professional TESOL experience

  • Academic strength

  • Demonstrated commitment to improving English language teaching in their home country

  • Potential for high impact after completing the degree

Application Process

  1. Submit the Hornby Scholarship Application Form
    (No need to apply to Exeter first.)

  2. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted and instructed to:

    • Apply formally for admission to the MEd TESOL programme at the University of Exeter.

  3. Final scholarship decisions will be made after the selection panel reviews interview performance and university admission approval.

Important Dates

  • Application Deadline: 9 February 2026

  • Shortlisting Notification: By 6 March 2026

  • Interview Dates: 16–25 March 2026

  • Final Outcome Notification: No later than 2 April 2026

Additional Terms & Conditions

  • Personal data will be shared with Exeter University and the Hornby Trust.

  • The award is conditional on applying and being accepted into the MEd TESOL programme.

  • Cannot be held alongside other scholarships (Hornby will only apply if it is the larger award).

  • Scholarship may be withdrawn if:

    • You defer your admission

    • Your fee status changes

    • You withdraw or interrupt studies (University finance regulations apply)
