What Is This Scholarship?

The Tom Queba and Pegasys Scholarships for Social Change, offered by Canon Collins Trust in partnership with the Tom Queba Memorial Fund and Pegasys, fund black and coloured South African students to pursue Honours or Master’s study at South African universities in 2027.

The scholarship is worth R85,000 and can be held for up to two years. It’s for students whose academic work connects directly to social and environmental development, especially work that improves the lives of South Africa’s poorest people.

Who Can Apply?

All four criteria must be met:

  • Be a black or coloured South African national residing in South Africa (as defined under South African BEE law)
  • Be under 34 years of age at the commencement of your course
  • Hold a good first degree (minimum second class upper division or equivalent), or be about to graduate in the year of application
  • Be studying or applying to study at Honours or Master’s level at a South African university

What the Scholarship Covers

Value: R85,000 per year
Duration: Up to 2 years
Study modes: Full-time, part-time, and distance learning are all supported

The scholarship also includes organised events and an annual conference for current scholars. Recipients are expected to participate in these activities and contribute to the Canon Collins network.

Eligible Areas of Study

Your proposed study must contribute directly to social and/or environmental development, particularly benefiting the poorest communities in South Africa. The scholarship is awarded across four areas:

  • Justice
  • Education
  • Humanities and the Arts
  • Sciences and Applied Sciences
