Who Can Apply
Nationality: All nationalities are welcome. Foreign nationals studying at US or Canadian universities must have studied at an accredited US or Canadian university for at least two years and must contact DAAD New York before applying to confirm eligibility.
Career stage: Graduating seniors or alumni. You must be enrolled full-time at an accredited university when applying.
Age: Must be younger than 32 at the start of the grant.
Research requirement: A well-defined study or research project that makes a stay in Germany essential — meaning you need to articulate specifically why Germany is the necessary location for what you want to study or research.
German language: Required only if applying to a German-taught programme. Many German graduate programmes are taught in English — German proficiency is not a universal requirement.
No concurrent German awards: Cannot hold another German or German-American/German-Canadian organisation award at the same time.
Medical field special cases: Candidates applying for dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, or veterinary medicine should contact DAAD directly for special guidelines.

This is not a scholarship for students who want to experience living in Germany — it is for students whose specific academic or research goals require the resources, expertise, or institutional environment that Germany uniquely provides. Before applying, ask yourself honestly: What exists in Germany that I cannot access elsewhere? Who are the faculty whose work is essential to mine? What archives, laboratories, data sources, or research groups are available in Germany and nowhere else?
The stronger your answer to these questions, the stronger your DAAD application.
Preference is given to applicants who have already been admitted to a German host institution or who can prove established contact with a faculty member at a German university. Identify your potential host institution and reach out to relevant faculty before applying — a letter of invitation from a German academic dramatically strengthens your candidacy.
