Studying at a university campus in the Swiss Alps sounds like a fantasy. At Franklin University Switzerland, it’s everyday reality, and high-achieving undergraduate applicants can receive merit scholarships of up to $20,000 per year for US and Canadian students, or CHF 21,500 per year for international students.
Franklin University Switzerland is a fully accredited American liberal arts university located in Lugano, in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland. It offers a genuinely distinctive undergraduate education — combining American university standards and degree recognition with European cultural immersion, field study across multiple countries, and a small, intensely international community of students and faculty.
All undergraduate applicants are considered for merit scholarships automatically — no separate application required. Priority goes to students who apply by the 1 December deadline.
The Merit Scholarship Tiers
Scholarships are awarded based on your recalculated GPA from high school or transferable undergraduate work. There are four tiers:

Merit scholarships are renewable for 7 semesters or until graduation, whichever comes first.
Important exclusion: Students who qualify for the lower Swiss/EU/EEA tuition rate are not eligible for merit scholarships.
Special Competitive Awards
Beyond the automatic merit scholarships, Franklin offers several competitive special awards for incoming students. These are cumulative with other financial aid and renewed annually, provided GPA and other conditions are maintained.
The Benjamin Franklin Leadership Award — for students demonstrating exceptional leadership potential and civic commitment.
The Ann Gardiner Award in Sustainability — for students with demonstrated passion for environmental sustainability and related fields.
The Brian Stanford Award in Creative Practices — for students in creative disciplines.
The Ambassador Wilfried Geens Award — a competitive award recognising outstanding international profiles.
The Franklin Honors Program Award — for students admitted to the Franklin Honors Program.
The Theo E. Brenner Scholarship — a need-based award for qualifying students.
The Life-Long Learning Scholarship — for non-traditional students returning to or continuing education.
SUNY-FUS 2+2 Jacques Villaret International Education Award — specifically for SUNY Community College students completing their first two years in the US before transferring to Franklin for their junior and senior years.
How to Apply
Apply to Franklin University Switzerland through the Office of Admissions. Merit scholarships are considered automatically as part of the admissions process; notify your scholarship interest in your application, and you will be informed of any merit award in your acceptance letter.
