The Chevening Scholarship is the UK government’s flagship international scholarship, one of the most prestigious and widely recognised postgraduate funding programmes in the world. At the University of Kent, Chevening scholars have been studying for years across a wide range of one-year taught Master’s degrees, with Kent consistently welcoming scholars from Chevening-eligible countries across the globe.

For the 2027/2028 academic year, Chevening applications are open from 4 August 2026 and close at 12:00 GMT on 6 October 2026.

What the Scholarship Covers

Chevening at Kent is a complete package. Your tuition, your living costs, your flights, and your visa are all covered, allowing you to focus entirely on your studies and the Chevening community.

Who Can Apply: Eligibility at Kent

You must:

• Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country (most countries in the world; check chevening.org for the current list)
• Commit to returning to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after the scholarship ends
• Hold an undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK upper second-class (2:1) Honours degree, or the equivalent qualification for your course (check Kent’s country-specific entry requirements at kent.ac.uk/international/countries)
• Have at least two years of work experience acquired after completing your undergraduate degree
• Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and receive an unconditional offer from at least one by 8 July 2027
• Be based in the UK when studying

You are not eligible if you:

• Hold British or dual British citizenship
• Hold refugee status in a country not eligible for Chevening
• Are currently residing in the UK at the time of application
• Are an employee, immediate relative of an employee, or former employee of a government department, the British Council, a partner UK university, or their subsidiaries
• Have previously studied in the UK on a UK government-funded scholarship

Note on Graduate Route Visa: Chevening scholars cannot apply for a Graduate Route Visa after completing their studies. By accepting the award, you commit to returning home for two years at the end of the scholarship. Plan accordingly.

Why Choose the University of Kent

Kent is one of the UK’s established research universities with a long-standing relationship with the Chevening programme. In the 2025–26 academic year, six Chevening Scholars studied at Kent, and the university actively celebrates its scholars, including invitations to VIP events such as visits to the Lord Mayor of Canterbury.

Campuses in Canterbury and Medway: Kent’s main campus in Canterbury is one of the most scenic in the UK, set in the Kent countryside near the historic city centre. Partner Scholarships: Kent holds three Chevening partner scholarships in addition to the standard Chevening awards. This gives Kent Chevening applicants additional funding opportunities that are specific to the university.

Course range: Kent offers a wide range of one-year taught Master’s programmes across law, social sciences, humanities, biosciences, computing, business, and the arts. All are eligible for Chevening consideration.

The 2027/2028 Application Timeline

This is a shorter application window than previous years. The 6 October 2026 deadline requires you to begin your application immediately. Do not wait until late September.

How to Apply for Chevening at Kent

All Chevening applications are submitted through the central Chevening portal at chevening.org/scholarships,  not through the University of Kent directly.

Kent’s advice: All applicants who wish to be considered for an award at Kent are encouraged to select the University of Kent as their first preference within their Chevening application. This maximises your chance of being placed at Kent if you are shortlisted.

Within the Chevening application, you nominate three UK universities. Your first choice matters — select Kent first if Kent is where you want to study.
