Access to quality education remains a critical factor in shaping the future of young Nigerians. Many families face financial challenges that make it difficult for students to pursue higher education, especially in the absence of adequate social support systems. Although targeted support programs for undergraduates exist, significant gaps in financial assistance persist, leaving many deserving students without comprehensive support.

Recognizing this need, the Alex Otti Foundation invites applications for the 2024/2025 Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme. This initiative supports academically outstanding students who are ancestrally from—or currently residing in—Abia State, helping them pursue their educational goals.

This scholarship has become one of the most prestigious scholarship programs in Abia State, with over 300 students currently benefiting from the program. It is awarded based on academic excellence, leadership potential, and a demonstrated commitment to societal development. Recipients are expected to leverage their education to contribute positively to their communities. The Foundation envisions a strong network of scholars who will drive positive change in Abia State, Nigeria and the world.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Eligible applicants include students who have completed their second-semester 100-level examinations and are progressing to 200-level, as well as those admitted in the 2022/2023 session—this accommodation is due to irregularities and non-uniformity in school calendars across public tertiary institutions. Candidates must have achieved a minimum CGPA of 3.5 (on a 5.0 scale) or its equivalent in their first year of study. Additionally, students who have recently secured direct-entry admission into 200-level and who will still be in their second year by April 2025 are also eligible.

Other Requirements

1. Statement of Result: signed statement of results for the first academic session, issued by the Department or Faculty Admin Officer (a representative of the Registrar). Direct-entry applicants must provide their qualifying examination results.

2. Proof of Residency: Candidates must present any of the following as proof of residence in Abia State: letter of recognition from a community/religious leader or a utility bill (covering the three months preceding the interview.

3. Essay Submission (1,200 words): Applicants must write an essay covering the following topics, dedicating 400 words to each:

  • a. How the current Nigerian economic situation has affected them and their families.
  • b. What the three tiers of government can do to improve the economy with a focus on significant sectors.
  • c. A proposed social welfare programme for the underprivileged undergraduate students, outlining its benefits, anticipated impact, and possible challenges.

4. Valid Identification A recognized means of identification must be provided.
