DAAD In-Country and In-Region Scholarship Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa 2026 

Overview

The DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme aims to strengthen higher education systems in Sub-Saharan Africa by supporting the training of future leaders, lecturers, and researchers. The scholarship provides funding for development-related Master’s and PhD programs for talented graduates and postgraduates who wish to pursue advanced studies in their home countries or within other Sub-Saharan African countries.

Eligibility

• Applicants must be nationals or residents of Sub-Saharan African countries.

• Master’s applicants must hold a first degree, while PhD applicants must hold a Master’s degree.

• Female candidates and applicants from disadvantaged regions or groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

• In-Country scholarships apply to studies within the applicant’s home country; In-Region scholarships apply to studies in another Sub-Saharan African country.

• South African applicants should apply through a separate DAAD-NRF program.

Benefits
Scholarship holders receive:

• Monthly stipend

• Study and research allowance

• Coverage for thesis publication costs

• Tuition fees

• Additional benefits for In-Region scholars include travel allowance and health insurance

Fellowship/Program Components

• Master’s programs: generally funded for up to 2 years

• PhD programs: generally funded for up to 3 years

• Fields of study include energy technology, public health, parasitology, bioinformatics, food chemistry, education, computer science, and more, depending on the host institution.

Application Requirements
Applicants must submit:

• Completed online application form

• Academic transcripts and certificates

• Curriculum vitae

• Research proposal or statement of purpose

• Recommendation letters from academic referees

Selection Criteria
Selection is based on academic merit, research potential, and the relevance of the applicant’s field of study to regional and national development. The process and requirements may vary between host universities.

Application Process

• Identify a participating host university and an eligible program.

• Review the specific call for applications for that program.

• Submit the application online through the host institution’s portal or as directed in the call.

• Ensure all documents are uploaded before the deadline.

• Scholarship Duration: Up to 2 years for Master’s, 3 years for PhD
