The Rhodes Scholarship for West Africa is a fully funded opportunity for outstanding students from select West African countries to pursue postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford. In partnership with the Oxford-Morland-West Africa Graduate Scholarship, this prestigious program empowers future leaders who demonstrate academic brilliance, integrity, leadership potential, and a commitment to making a difference.

Scholarship Categories

There are 3 scholarships available annually for students from these West African countries:
Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Saint Helena, Senegal, Sierra Leone, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Togo.

Fully Funded Rhodes Scholarship for West African Students to Study at Oxford University: Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of one of the listed West African countries.

  • Have completed an undergraduate degree with academic excellence.

  • Be aged between 18–24 by 1st October 2026 (with exceptions up to 27 years for those with completed undergraduate degrees later).

  • Have a strong academic record, leadership potential, and a commitment to service.

Documents Required

  • Birth certificate or national ID/passport

  • Official transcript(s)

  • Personal statement

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)

  • Proof of residency or citizenship

  • Academic reference letters (typically 5–6)

Important Notes

  • The scholarship covers all university and college fees, a living stipend, visa fees, and one economy-class airfare to and from the UK.

  • Candidates are expected to apply to the University of Oxford after selection.

Selection Process

  • Online application with supporting documents

  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an in-person or virtual interview

  • Final selection will be based on academic excellence, leadership, character, and commitment to service
