Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) 2026: Overview
The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) was established in 2009 by the Research Grants Council (RGC) to attract the world’s best and brightest students to pursue doctoral studies in Hong Kong. Each year, 400 fellowships are awarded across eight world-class universities, offering outstanding students a unique opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research in Asia’s global innovation hub.

Applicants must:

Be seeking admission as new full-time PhD students in one of the eight participating universities:

Lingnan University

The Chinese University of Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) 2026: Benefits

Annual stipend: HK$340,800 (≈ US$43,690)
-
Conference & research-related travel allowance: HK$14,200 (≈ US$1,820) per year

Funding duration: Up to 3 years (additional support available from universities if program extends beyond 3 years)

Application Requirements
Applicants are expected to provide:

Application Process

Submit an initial application via the HKPFS online system to obtain an HKPFS reference number.

Apply for PhD admission to selected universities, quoting the HKPFS reference number.

Shortlisted candidates will be reviewed by Selection Panels in either:

Sciences, Medicine, Engineering & Technology

Humanities, Social Sciences & Business Studies

Successful awardees will receive funding support starting September 2026 (academic year start).
