Michigan State University Scholarships for International Students 2025 – Up to $25,000 Per Year Overview

Michigan State University (MSU) offers a variety of scholarships for incoming first-year international students. Most awards are merit-based and automatically considered through the general admission application, with the exception of the #YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship which requires a separate application. Scholarships range from $3,000 to $25,000 per year and are renewable for up to eight semesters.

Eligibility

• Must be an incoming international first-year student (non-U.S. resident status)

• Apply for admission to an undergraduate program at MSU

• Must meet the early action deadline (Nov. 1) to guarantee scholarship consideration

• Honors College scholarships require invitation to the Honors College

Benefits
Admissions Scholarships (no extra application required):

• President’s Scholarship: $15,000 per year

• Provost’s Scholarship: $12,000 per year

• Dean’s Scholarship: $10,000 per year

• 1855 Scholarship: $7,000 per year

• Beaumont Tower Scholarship: $5,000 per year

• Global Community Scholars Scholarship: $3,000 per year

#YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship (supplemental application required):

• $25,000 per year toward tuition

• Renewable for up to 8 semesters

• Open to students committed to promoting intercultural exchange and inclusion

• Application opens August 1 and closes early February

Additional Scholarships:

• Red Cedar Scholarship: $1,250/year for dependents or grandchildren of MSU alumni

• Presidential Study Abroad Scholarship: $3,000–$5,000 toward study abroad opportunities

Honors College Scholarships (invitation only):

• Excellence Scholarship: $13,000/year

• Distinction Scholarship: $5,000/year (for citizens of Canada, Mexico, or U.S. permanent residents)

• Professorial Assistantship: ~$3,500/year stipend + 8–10 hrs/week of mentored research (4 semesters)

• General application to MSU serves as the scholarship application for most awards

• A separate application is required for #YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship

Selection Criteria

• Academic excellence (grades, curriculum rigor)

• Commitment to diversity, intercultural exchange, or research (where applicable)

• Holistic review for Honors College invitees

Restrictions

• Scholarships are limited and competitive
