Morland African Writing Scholarships 2025: Overview
The Miles Morland Foundation (MMF) has officially opened applications for the 2025 Morland Writing Scholarships. This annual program supports African writers of fiction and non-fiction by offering them the financial freedom to complete a full-length English-language book.
- Application Opens: 1st July 2025
- Application Deadline: 19th September 2025
- Winners Announced: November 2025
- Eligibility: African writers (from the continent or diaspora) writing in English
Scholarship Purpose
The Morland Writing Scholarships aim to amplify African voices by enabling writers to focus entirely on writing their proposed book for a period of up to one year. Each scholar receives a monthly grant during this time to support their writing process.
What the Scholarship Offers

Financial grant for up to 12 months to work on a proposed book

Open to both fiction and non-fiction writers

Four scholars are selected annually
Morland African Writing Scholarships 2025: Eligibility Criteria

Must be a writer born in Africa, with an African passport or parentage

Must submit:

A detailed book proposal

A 2,000–5,000-word writing sample (fiction or non-fiction)

A brief biography or CV
-
A scan of a passport or official document proving African identity

Writers may apply again even if previously unsuccessful, but revised proposals and new samples are strongly recommended
Selection Process

Applications are judged by a panel of experienced African literary professionals

This year, the foundation welcomes Goretti Kyomuhendo to the panel

Four new scholars will be selected and announced in November 2025
