Studying for a Master’s or PhD at a world-leading international university is one of the most powerful investments a South African academic can make. The cost, however, is often the barrier that turns aspiration into regret.

The Patrick & Margaret Flanagan Scholarship at Rhodes University removes that barrier entirely. This is a full-cost scholarship, covering tuition, accommodation, living expenses, and research costs for South African students pursuing Master’s or doctoral studies at international universities.

Applications open on 24 August 2026 and close on 24 September 2026. This is a 31-day window. If you are eligible, act immediately when it opens.

What Makes the Flanagan Scholarship Exceptional

The word “full cost” is used frequently in scholarship descriptions to mean different things. In the context of the Flanagan Scholarship, it genuinely means full cost — tuition fees, accommodation, living expenses, and research-related costs are all covered. This is the complete financial package for pursuing a postgraduate degree at an international institution.

Rhodes University administers this scholarship through its research office, and it is offered annually to a small number of exceptional South African candidates. The competitive field is limited by the South African eligibility requirement, meaning the scholarship pool is significantly smaller than global awards — which improves a well-prepared candidate’s realistic chances.

Who Can Apply

Based on the programme structure, the scholarship is designed for:

• South African citizens
• Registered or eligible to register as a postgraduate student
• Pursuing Master’s or PhD studies at an international (non-South African) university
• With a strong academic record and a clear, credible research plan

What You Need to Submit

Applications are submitted as a single PDF document emailed to tasmin.jones@ru.ac.za. Save the file as: “Your Surname P&M Flanagan Scholarship Application”

Your application must include all four of the following — incomplete applications will not be considered:

1. Letter of Motivation

Your motivation letter must address all four of these points:

a) Why you plan to study at an international university
This is not asking for generic reasons (“international exposure” or “world-class facilities”). It requires a specific account of why an international setting is essential for your particular research — what expertise, resources, archives, laboratories, or intellectual communities exist at your target institution that you cannot access in South Africa.

b) What you plan to do upon completion of your Master’s or PhD
Be specific and credible. Where will you go? What role will you take? How does your completed research contribute to South Africa’s academic, scientific, professional, or public life? The scholarship is investing in your future impact — show them what that impact looks like.

c) Your intended research focus
A clear, specific description of your proposed research. What is the problem or question? Why does it matter? What methodology do you intend to use? What is the expected contribution to knowledge? This section should read like the opening of a research proposal — specific, grounded, and intellectually serious.

d) Which university do you wish to enrol with, and why have you selected that university
Name the specific institution. Explain why it is the right place for your research — not why it is prestigious, but why it specifically has what your specific research requires. Name faculty members if relevant. Describe the particular resources, research environment, or institutional strengths that make this the right place for your work.

2. Detailed Academic CV

Include full academic history, research experience, publications (if any), conference presentations, and — critically — email contact details of three academic referees, one of whom must be a Head of Department or Dean.

3. Full Academic Transcript

Must be certified. Not a student portal screenshot — an officially certified academic transcript.

4. Certified ID or Passport Copy
