UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education 2025 Overview

The UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education recognizes outstanding and innovative contributions that promote educational opportunities for girls and women. Established in 2016, this prize is the first of its kind within UNESCO, showcasing successful projects that enhance the quality of life for girls and women through education.

The Government of China funds the award, which annually grants two laureates a financial award of $50,000 each to further their work.

UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education 2025  Selection Process

  • Call for Nominations: Open until 12 May 2025.
  • Review by International Jury: June/July 2025.
  • Prize Laureates Announcement: Early October 2025.
  • Award Ceremony: 11 October 2025, on International Day of the Girl Child.

UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education 2025  Eligibility

Who Can Nominate?
  • UNESCO Member State Governments (via Permanent Delegations to UNESCO).
  • Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in official partnership with UNESCO.
  • Self-nominations are NOT accepted.
Who Can Be Nominated?
  • Individuals, institutions, or organizations working to advance girls’ and women’s education.
  • The nominated project/program must have been running for at least two years and meet the selection criteria.

How to Apply

  1. Check Eligibility: Ensure you or your institution meets the selection criteria.
  2. Contact a Nominating Entity:
    • Your country’s National Commission to UNESCO.
    • A relevant NGO in official partnership with UNESCO.
  3. Submit a Nomination:
    • Nominations must be submitted online via UNESCO’s platform.
    • Member States can submit up to three nominations.
  4. Validation Process:
    • Nominations from National Commissions must be validated by the Permanent Delegation.
    • NGOs in official partnership must have their nominations validated by their headquarters.
  5. Submit Requests for Candidate Access (if needed):
    • If a candidate needs access to complete the nomination form, requests should be sent to GWEPrize@unesco.org by 10 May 2025.

Key Dates for 2025

  • 5 March – Call for nominations opens.
  • 5 March 10 May – Submission of nominations online.
  • June/July – Jury deliberation.
  • Early October – Announcement of Prize laureates.
  • 11 October – Award ceremony.

International Jury

  • Composed of five independent experts who evaluate the nominations and recommend laureates to UNESCO’s Director-General.
