The University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF) is a prestigious merit-based award designed to support full-time Master’s and PhD students who demonstrate outstanding academic excellence and research potential. Offered annually, this fellowship helps graduate students focus on advancing their studies and research while receiving financial support.
University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF) 2026: Eligibility
Applicants must:

Have achieved a minimum admission GPA of 3.0 (departments may set higher requirements).

Be admitted to a Master’s or PhD program at the University of Manitoba.

Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and no grade below C+.
-
Be enrolled full-time and make satisfactory progress in their program.

Show strong potential as a researcher and scholar.

Not hold another award/scholarship of equal or greater value than the UMGF.

Not have already held more than 4 years of UMGF funding.

Not change departments or programs while holding the award.
Note: All students, regardless of citizenship, are eligible. Pre-master’s and occasional students are not eligible.
University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF) 2026: Benefits

Master’s Students: $20,000 per year for up to 24 months (maximum $40,000).

PhD Students: $25,000 per year for up to 48 months (maximum $100,000).
Fellowship/Program Components

Research Support – Awardees must show promise as researchers and contribute to their academic fields.

Graduate Development – Fellows are expected to maintain academic excellence and steady progress throughout the program.
Application Requirements

Strong academic record (minimum GPA 3.0).

Official admission into a graduate program at the University of Manitoba.

Departmental recommendation (students cannot apply directly to FGS).

No active admission-related holds on the student account.
Selection Criteria

Academic Excellence (GPA, transcripts).

Research Potential (publications, proposals, or academic record).

Departmental Nomination (only recommended students will be considered).
Application Process

Departments nominate selected students to the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS).
