Wellington Doctoral Scholarship 2025 for International and Domestic PhD Students: Overview

The Wellington Doctoral Scholarship is offered by Victoria University of Wellington to support high-achieving students beginning full-time PhD studies. Approximately 110 scholarships are awarded annually to both domestic and international students across all disciplines.

Eligibility Criteria

• Open to graduates of any university (in New Zealand or abroad)

• Must be applying for or already enrolled full-time in a PhD at Victoria University of Wellington

• Must have a strong academic record, excellent academic references, and/or demonstrated research potential

• May include candidates with publications in high-quality journals

• Research alignment with the school or strategic interests may strengthen the application

• Current PhD students enrolled for over 6 months may have reduced scholarship tenure

• Academic transcripts (if not from Victoria University of Wellington)

• Academic references

• Research proposal and relevant documents as per application guidelines

Important Notes

• Offered in 3 rounds annually: 1 March, 1 July, and 1 November

• Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted

• Offers are conditional on full-time PhD enrolment

• Must sign a Doctoral Research Scholarship Contract

• Part-time study or employment (up to 600 hours/year) allowed under certain conditions

• Progress reports required every six months

• Tenure can be suspended for up to 12 months with approval

Selection Process
