Engineering Manager

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead one of our product squads. You will collaborate closely with a Product Manager and together you will form the leadership duo for the squad. As an Engineering Manager, creating a high performing team will be your main responsibility. We believe that focus on growing people, iterative agile delivery and technical excellence are cornerstones for high performing teams.

We expect you to be an experienced people leader, knowing how to grow engineers and create a psychologically safe work environment. Most of your team will be working remotely and while we regularly bring everyone together you need to know how to manage remote teams effectively.

You will be accountable for the technical delivery of the squad. We believe in Agile and shipping value in small iterative pieces for our customers. You’ll be expected to coach your squad in best Agile practices and overall own the delivery process for your team.

You are also expected to drive technical excellence and best engineering practices in your squad. You will own the technical backlog for your squad and maintain a clear picture of what technical investment brings the greatest value. While you are accountable for delivery and excellence, we expect you to act as a servant leader, defining the problems and boundaries for engineers, and then let them go about solving the problem.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a squad of engineers across multiple platforms
  • Own technical delivery and drive Agile practices of the squad
  • Drive technical excellence and contribute to the technology strategy work of the broader department
  • Coach, mentor and drive the competence development of your engineers
  • Create a higher performing squad
  • Collaborate closely with your product and design counterparts in driving value
  • Drive technical excellence and best engineering practices in your squad

Required skills and experience

  • 2+ years of experience in managing people and 5+ years of experience in software development roles
  • Experience in managing and growing engineering talent
  • Experience in managing remote teams
  • Great analytics problems solving and organisational skills
  • Great soft skills in motivating, inspiring and leading a team
  • Experience in working and driving agile delivery practices
  • Collaborate effectively with product, across technical leadership and business stakeholders

Desired skills and experience

  • Experience working with container orchestration and microservice patterns
  • Previous experience in mentoring more junior managers is considered a plus
  • Working with front-end Typescript apps in a monorepo is considered a plus
  • Balancing product changes with migrating legacy software
  • Driving quality practices in a squad with focus on automation
