UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) 2025 Overview
The UNESCO-Japan Prize on ESD, funded by the Government of Japan, awards three annual prizes of USD 50,000 each to institutions and organizations engaged in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). It was first awarded in 2015 and aims to recognize innovative and transformative educational projects that promote sustainable development.

Open to institutions, organizations, or entities engaged in ESD.

Nominations must focus on a specific ESD project or program that meets the selection criteria.

Projects must have been running for at least four years.

USD 50,000 prize for each of the three winners.

Recognition by UNESCO for impactful contributions to sustainable development through education.
UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) 2025 Selection Criteria
Projects are evaluated based on:

Transformation – Encourages individual and societal change towards sustainability.

Integration – Addresses social, economic, and environmental dimensions holistically.
-
Innovation – Introduces new approaches to ESD, whether in themes, methodologies, or partnerships.
Additionally, projects should be:

Ongoing for at least four years.
-
Scalable and replicable.
-
Proven to have high impact relative to resources used.
-
Contributing to one or more of the five priority action areas of the ESD for 2030 framework.
Application Process
Who Can Submit Nominations?

Governments of UNESCO Member States (via their Permanent Delegation to UNESCO).

Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) or foundations officially partnered with UNESCO.

Self-nominations are not accepted.
How to Apply?

Complete the Online Nomination Form
-
Submitted in English or French via UNESCO’s platform.
-
NGOs and Permanent Delegations can submit up to three nominations each.
-
Supporting materials (publications, photos, videos) must be uploaded.
-

Submit Before Deadline
-
Deadline: 18 April 2025 (UTC+1, Paris time).
-
Permanent Delegations, NGOs, or foundations must finalize and submit nominations through UNESCO’s online system.

Selection & Award Process

An independent international jury of five experts evaluates nominations.

Winners are selected by the Director-General of UNESCO based on jury recommendations.
