Teacher Training Placement Requirement

This is crucial and non-negotiable: the British Council is not a teacher training provider. Receiving this scholarship does not place you on a training course. You are responsible for securing your own place on an eligible teacher training programme in England.

Specifically, you must:

• Secure a place on an eligible non-salaried Initial Teacher Training (ITT) course in England that leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
• Have this place confirmed by September 2026
• You can apply for the scholarship before receiving your ITT offer, but the place must be secured by September

Critical Information for International Applicants

There have been recent policy changes affecting international students that you must understand before applying.

Scholarship and Bursary Eligibility for International Students

Due to a Department for Education (DfE) policy update, international students are now only eligible to receive the LTTS Scholarship funding (or the associated Bursary) if they meet one of these two conditions:

Condition A: You received an offer for a non-salaried MFL or Physics teacher training course leading to QTS on or before Thursday, 7 May 2026, at 5:00 PM.

Condition B: You can receive funding under Student Finance England criteria — meaning you meet the nationality and residency requirements for UK student finance.

If you’re an international applicant who does not meet either of these conditions, you are not currently eligible for the scholarship funding under the 2026–27 rules. This is a significant change from previous years and affects how Nigerian and other African students should approach this opportunity.

International Relocation Payment — No Longer Available for 2026–27

There is an additional change for international trainees starting in 2026–27: the International Relocation Payment (IRP) — a separate government payment to help international teacher trainees with relocation costs — is no longer available for those starting in the 2026–27 academic year.

The LTTS scholarship eligibility itself is not affected by this IRP change, but it does mean one less layer of financial support for international arrivals. Contact your ITT provider directly for details of what financial support you may still be entitled to receive.
